Entry #4 Planet Her

 

It has been almost four months since pop star, Doja Cat, has released her third studio album, Planet Her. I do not know about you, but I have been OBSESSED. Despite the album being out for a little under 4 months, it is already my most listened to album of this year. If I am being honest, Planet Her is already considered my favorite album of this year. Unless some artists decide to stop being stubborn and finally drop their long anticipated albums (I am looking at you, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, and SZA.)

From the intro to the outro, Doja’s delivery and energy in every song is just unmatched. The lyricism, the ad libs, the production, and her vocals create such a fun but high quality album. She plays with different voices and flows, going from emotional songs like “Been Like This” to upbeat rap like “Get Into It (Yuh)”. Although they are two completely different songs with completely different flows, emotions, and messages, they do not seem out of place being on the same album. This goes to show just how versatile she really is, being able to rap one second then hit high notes the other. Each song flows right after the other despite sounding completely different from each other, which I absolutely love. My biggest pet peeve is not being able to tell apart songs on the same album, Planet Her absolutely does not have that problem.  

Another category she absolutely killed was lyricism. Her lyrics are not repetitive like most pop albums are. Her lyricism in some of her songs may not always have a deep message, but it is very intricate and flows together effortlessly, as well as making complete sense the entire time. I never heard any filler lyrics or random bars being thrown in just because it rhymes. A great example of this is in “Alone”, she switches between rapping on the verses and vocals on the chores. Her rapping tells a story of her facing the fear of leaving her toxic relationship and being alone; while the chorus is her message to the toxic partner. In the song, “You Right,” she tells a story of conflict on whether or not to be faithful to her partner and the insecurities causing her to question her loyalty. Her lyrics are well written and allow you to feel the emotion put into them. Her hard work and dedication put into creating this album reflect greatly on the album as a whole.

This album will definitely be remembered as a classic, Doja Cat has proved herself as an artist as a whole. She is not someone to be overlooked or dismissed as a typical pop star. Her discography has been nothing short of great, I can’t wait to see just how much she explores and experiments with her upcoming work.
